Triptychs
Challenge
Draw yourself with three different expressions. But, while you can use a mirror to see yourself, you cannot ever look at the paper. Or if you choose to look, you can never lift the pencil or pen from the paper. Try one or both.
Get some pencils and pens and have fun. Easy!
A triptych is usually a collection of three paintings, displayed on three connected panels. Here are some examples and some more background.
In less than fifteen minutes, you are going to make two triptychs, out of your own image. You can use a pencil or a pen, whatever you prefer.
For the first triptych there are three rules:
- You must draw your face, three times, each with a very different expression.
- You must be looking in a mirror the entire time you are drawing.
- You cannot look at the paper itself.
When you finish you will have three self-portraits, with three different expressions. Tape them to the wall side by side to finish the triptych. Is there a most artistic order for the three of them?
For the second triptych, draw members of your family. There are just two rules:
- Each of the three pictures must be a different family member.
- Once you start a drawing, you can NEVER lift your pencil or pen off the paper.
When you finish you will have three pictures of three family members. Tape these to the wall side by side. Again, is there a most artistic order?
